BC high school winners: E-Spirit business plans

Three B.C. high school teams have won awards in the E-Spirit business plan competition for aboriginal students in grades 10 to 12.

Students from 12 B.C. teams qualified to attend the Moncton, NB award ceremony. More than 200 finalists participated. Qualifying teams presented their business idea to an independent panel of experts who judged the business plans and accompanying displays.

The silver award winner and cultural expression winner is Kinnikinnick Tea House presented by students from Salmon Arm Secondary, Jackson campus. Kinnikinnick Tea House is to be a relaxing and welcoming place which will offer a variety of indigenous teas and foods to the local and tourist population. The students, Jennifer Fenkhuber, Xavier Gerlib, Dale Tomma and Dani Valgardson worked with facilitator Meredith Rusk.

Sitest Tay: A Night to Perform won Most Original Business Name for students Martina Rennie, Justine Tom, Britney Saul and Nina Sidorczuk of Salmon Arm Secondary, Sullivan Campus. The facilitator was Glen Jollymour.Sitest Tay will allow musicians to perform and sell general merchandise such as CDs and clothing.

Pleasant Valley Secondary School’s Chick Tips Nail Bourtique won Best Team Spirit for Armstrong students Jessica Davidson, Torrie Nicholas and facilitator Bernice Jensen.

Other B.C. teams included: Barriere Secondary School (Barriere); Chase Secondary School (Chase); Clearwater Secondary School (Clearwater); Correlieu Secondary School (Quesnel); Four Directions Storefront School (Kamloops); Gold River Secondary School (Gold River); Hazelton Secondary School (Hazelton); Stein Valley Nlakapamux School (Lytton); and W.L. Seaton Secondary School (Vernon).
